In the standards-setting process, consumers provide an important perspective of how products and services are really used. It was consumer members, for example, who identified the dangers of drop side cribs, called for improving and strengthening warnings for liquid laundry packet hazards, demanded a new label and additional safety requirements for shopping carts, and launched the development of standards for consumer beach umbrellas after flyaway incidents led to serious and fatal injuries. ASTM's exoskeletons and exosuits committee (F48) is developing a standard that offers a systematic approach to testing focused on verifying the safety and effectiveness of exoskeletons used in manual labor. “Given its pivotal role in augmenting the capabilities of workers, establishing a procedural framework verifying the safe and effective use of the exoskeleton is imperative,” says Matthew Dickinson, senior lecturer in mechanical engineering, School of Engineering, University of Central Lancashire. “The proposed standard will ensure that essential prerequisites, such as power supply verification for tools, are duly addressed before commencing tasks.” https://lnkd.in/eyq47x_F #exoskeletons #exotechnology #labor
