About the Course

ASTM International has partnered with Tinius Olsen to provide you with a best-in-class learning experience. This training course is a series of educational interactive training sessions where the attendees will gain hands-on experience. You will be able to describe principles, techniques and mechanical properties in respect to hardness testing as well as demonstrate proper use of ASTM Test Methods. Practical and written examinations will be conducted during the course.

The following course subjects will be presented, and following completion, all attendees will demonstrate basic understanding of these core items in regards to Rockwell, Brinell and Knoop-Vickers hardness testing, utilizing industry guidelines and applicable ASTM standards (E10, E18, E92 and E384)

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Describe basic principles, techniques, and equipment for hardness testing
  • Define mechanical properties in respect to hardness values
  • Explain what is needed to perform the tests
  • Demonstrate proper use and application of various hardness testers
  • Determine what types of hardness tests are required by the material/specification requested
  • Understanding different test machine set-ups and requirements
  • Display basic understanding of load/force hardness data including discussions of elastic versus plastic deformation, indent spacing, reading of depth of indent scope resolution, etc.
  • Discuss what affects the tests/calibration
Who Should Attend

This course is designed to examine the benefits of standards used with the various hardness testing platforms. Training will be targeted at a level for those currently in the mechanical testing arena as well as students involved in material science/engineering programs wishing for hands-on approach from industry experts.
