Virtual Event

In light of rising concerns about the spread of COVID-19 and calls to contain the virus, ASTM will be offering this in-person training as a live streamed virtual event.

About the Course

This 12-hour virtual course spread over three consecutive days virtually or 1.5 days in person covers the basics of degradability and biodegradability, including the differences and similarities between them and also the basics of non-petroleum based content in materials and products. Topics covered include definitions, test methods and specifications, certification agencies and their requirements and claim requirements in the US. This course also identifies biodegradable materials and additives (plastic and fiber-based) and the basics of composting.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Define and differentiate between degradability and biodegradability
  • Know the different types of biodegradability
  • Provide the details on pertinent ASTM standards with comparison to ISO and CEN standards
  • Understand the differences between the standards
  • Know the basics of the test methods
  • Understand the requirements for certification
  • Understand the rules for biodegradability claims in the US

Please note: This course emphasizes fundamentals rather than advanced theory.

Kelvin is chair of the ASTM D20.96 subcommittee on Environmentally Degradable Plastics and Biobased Products that sets the standards for biodegradation and for biobased content; Kelvin is also Vice Chair- Products for D20 Plastics committee.

About Sponsoring Committee

Established in 1898, ASTM is one of the world's largest voluntary standards development organizations. ASTM standards have grown to be among the world's most widely used and accepted documents. The 82-volume Annual Book of ASTM Standards contain over 13,000 standards written by 34,000 members on 140 technical committees. These standards are widely used throughout the world as the basis of purchasing and other contracts, codes, laws and regulations. The standards referenced in this course were developed by ASTM Committee D20 on Plastics. For information on Committee D20, contact Alyson Fick at (610) 832-9640 or go to our D20 technical committee page.
